This fashion plate, *Très Parisien*, by G-P. Joumard, made in June 1922, feels like a quick breath of fresh air—a moment captured with ink and colour. I'm imagining the artist perched at a cafe table, rapidly sketching down the essence of Parisian style. Those sleeves! Check out the looseness of form, the playful shapes that suggest movement and lightness. How much could the artist capture in a few strokes? How to find the exact right colour to suggest the fabric’s feel? You can sense the artist’s intuition guiding the hand, finding the balance between precision and spontaneity. Look at the way the shapes come together, almost like a collage. How the patterned fabric meets the solid blocks of colour. These juxtapositions create a playful tension—just as I try to do in my own paintings! I’m always trying to bring together seemingly disparate elements, trusting that the friction between them can spark new ways of seeing. And isn’t that what art is all about? An ongoing conversation, where we riff off each other's ideas, pushing boundaries, and discovering new ways to express ourselves.
