Curatorial notes
This small photograph, "Portret van een jongen met wandelstok en hoed", was made by Edgardo Debás, using the wet collodion process, a popular method in the late 19th century. This process involved coating a glass plate with a light-sensitive emulsion, exposing it in the camera while still wet, and then developing it immediately. The result is a finely detailed image with a distinctive tonal range, as we see here in the boy’s tweed suit and carefully-placed accessories. Beyond the technical aspects, the photograph speaks volumes about social status. The boy’s tailored clothing and accessories, indicate a family of means. Photography itself, though becoming more accessible, was still a luxury. Debás's artistry lies not only in his mastery of the wet collodion process but also in capturing a moment that reflects the values and aspirations of the time, a society where image and representation were becoming increasingly important.
