Hendrik Doijer made this photograph, "Meetlijn bij de Witwatra", sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century. The tonal range is super compressed, almost claustrophobic, which flattens the space and pushes everything forward, like a wall of foliage. The image is so dense it's hard to parse, but the longer you look, the more details emerge. There’s a path, suggested by the title, but it’s almost totally overgrown, as if nature is reclaiming it. The way the light filters through the leaves creates a dappled effect, a play of light and shadow that's almost abstract. I’m reminded of the Hudson River School painters, like Frederic Church, who were also interested in capturing the grandeur of nature, but Doijer seems less interested in grand vistas and more in the nitty-gritty details of the undergrowth. This feels more personal, more intimate. It's a world away from the slick, hyper-real digital images of our time, where everything is so perfect and airless. I like how this piece leaves room for mystery, for doubt.
