Isaac Israels made this sketch of two figures with charcoal on paper, though we do not know when. Israels was a Jewish Dutch painter, who depicted the realities of the working class and the marginalized with sensitivity. Here, two figures are rapidly sketched, capturing the spontaneity of modern life. One seems to be a woman in a cloak and headscarf. The other figure is harder to define. Israels was interested in representing everyday life, particularly of women and the working class, and often portrayed them in vulnerable or intimate situations. His depictions were revolutionary because he chose to show the dignity and humanity of those who were often ignored or misrepresented. The unfinished nature of the work invites you to bring your own experiences, emotions, and associations to the image. It offers a space for personal reflection and empathy, as we imagine the lives and stories of the two figures.
