These chairs were made by George Nakashima, and though they're not paintings, they share similar qualities of rhythm and intuition in their making. Just think about the way his hands moved across the wood, carefully carving and shaping each piece. I’m fascinated by the warm, honeyed tones of the wood, and the deliberate craftsmanship. The slanted back, made of thin vertical slats, creates a sense of openness and lightness, while the seat looks smooth and inviting. It feels so human. I imagine Nakashima deeply attuned to the material, responding to its natural grain and texture, coaxing it into this elegant form. There’s an underlying geometry to the whole construction, but it feels organic, not rigid. Just like a painting, this chair is a conversation between the artist and the material. It's about feeling, intention, and meaning, all embodied in a functional object. It's a beautiful way to experience the world.
