Jacobus Wijsman created this print, "Ruiters en mensen langs de waterkant," capturing riders and people along the waterfront. Notice the rearing horse—a powerful symbol throughout art history. This motif, echoing back to antiquity, often signifies strength, vitality, and sometimes even rebellion. Think of equestrian statues of Roman emperors, where the horse embodies imperial power and control. Here, however, the rearing horse seems less about dominance and more about untamed energy, a spirited resistance against the rider's control. This motif has resurfaced, evolved, and taken on new meanings in different historical contexts. This image subtly engages viewers on a deep, subconscious level.
