Scene in the Tyrol by Antonio Cioci

Scene in the Tyrol c. 18th century

Editor: This is Antonio Cioci’s “Scene in the Tyrol,” housed at the Harvard Art Museums. It's so detailed, but almost unsettling. What feelings or ideas do you think Cioci was trying to convey? Curator: The Tyrol, even today, evokes a sense of romantic isolation, a place where cultural memory is strong. The church on the hill becomes a symbol of continuity. Do you see how the travelers below are dwarfed by the landscape? Editor: I do, it's like they are entering a world with its own history. Curator: Exactly! Cioci uses this image to evoke the psychological weight of entering a space laden with centuries of stories. The journey becomes more than physical; it’s a symbolic passage. Editor: I never considered the landscape itself as a kind of symbol. It's fascinating to see how the setting amplifies the emotional impact.
