Jost Amman created this intriguing drawing, “Two Polyhedrons with a Cone as a Starting Point,” sometime between 1539 and 1591. Notice the two cone-based structures dominate, rendered with precision using line and form. The structure on the left ascends as a helix, while the form on the right is defined by grid patterns. Amman’s focus on geometric forms encourages us to consider the underlying order of the visual world. We can view these polyhedrons as signs within a semiotic system, pointing beyond their immediate appearance towards broader philosophical ideas about structure and space. The interplay of solidity and void, the contrast between linear precision and spatial ambiguity. Ultimately, the drawing is a structured exploration, inviting us to reconsider our understanding of form and the frameworks that define our perception.
