This is Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s "Faith," an engraving made in the mid-16th century. This work emerges from the tumultuous landscape of the Reformation, a period that was punctuated by profound religious and political upheaval. Bruegel captures a congregation within a grand church. Note the diversity within this community, as people from different social strata gather under one roof. The artist infuses the scene with a sense of the performative, highlighting the constructed nature of religious rituals. Bruegel’s personal religious views are unknown, however, it has been suggested that Bruegel satirizes religious institutions, portraying them as theatrical spectacles rather than genuine displays of faith.
