This is a drawing made by Jan Peeter Verdussen some time in the 18th century. The most striking elements are the three horses, yoked and ready, and the humble dwelling in the background. These horses, symbols of labour and vitality, evoke ancient associations. We can trace their lineage back to classical antiquity, where the horse, often paired or quadriga, was associated with the sun god, and the cycles of time and life. In this tranquil scene, the horses represent the lifeblood of agrarian society. Note the small dog resting in the foreground. From ancient Egypt to the classical world and beyond, the dog appears as a symbol of fidelity and watchfulness. The presence of a dog introduces an emotional depth, inviting reflection on themes of loyalty, protection, and the intimate bond between humans and animals. Thus the power of this humble scene lies not only in its surface depiction but in the echo of timeless symbols—resonances from the depths of our collective past.
