Chris van der Windt made this etching of a village on a canal with ink on paper. I imagine van der Windt hunched over a metal plate, carefully etching lines to capture the essence of this sleepy village, maybe the quiet Dutch countryside was calling him. The lines are so delicate, like whispers of light on the water. I see the way the thatched roofs huddle together, and the bare trees reach up like bony fingers, they create a symphony of texture and form. What was he thinking as he scratched those lines into the plate? Was he trying to capture a fleeting moment of beauty, or preserve a memory of a place he loved? Maybe he was in dialogue with artists like Whistler, finding beauty in the everyday and overlooked. Artists, they're always talking to each other across time, passing down ideas like secrets. They are embracing uncertainty, ambiguity and allowing for multiple interpretations.
