This is a lead medal by Jan Boskam, commemorating the death of Mary II of England. Boskam created this medal as a memento of a monarch whose reign, alongside William III, was defined by significant political and religious shifts in England. On one side, we see a portrait of Mary II, her visage captured in solemn profile. Turn the medal over and you will see an allegorical scene, Neptune in his chariot oversees a ship battling turbulent waters, symbolizing the ship of state struggling after the Queen's passing. Boskam's medal is not just a record of a historical event, but a reflection on power, loss, and legacy. It encapsulates the public mourning and political uncertainty that followed the death of a queen who, in her time, navigated the complex dynamics of monarchy, gender, and governance.
