This unsettling, untitled work, created by Zdzislaw Beksinski, visualizes a landscape of grotesque figures rendered with stark precision. Beksinski's practice was deeply affected by his experiences growing up in Poland during World War II and later under Soviet rule, which instilled a sense of dread and anxiety that permeates his art. Here, a crowd of deformed faces presses in, while a central figure with multiple eyes seems both burdened and defiant. His works delve into themes of mortality and decay, influenced by the socio-political despair of his time. Beksinski once said he wished to paint "as if photographing dreams." There is also the sense of him giving form to collective trauma and personal anguish, a visual language of suffering and resilience.
