Editor: Here we have "Autumn landscape near the Taunus," by Karl Peter Burnitz. It's made using watercolour, drawing and paper. The soft colours create quite a subdued, serene mood for me. How would you interpret this work? Curator: Ah, yes, Burnitz. I find this landscape whispering secrets, don't you? It’s as if the trees themselves are exhaling a final, golden breath before winter’s hush. Notice how he's layered the watercolor, almost like memories fading into the landscape. Have you ever stood on a hill and felt the wind carry the scent of turning leaves? Editor: I have! It feels exactly like this. Is that layering typical of landscape works at the time? Curator: Indeed. Burnitz seems to be tipping his hat to the Hudson River School chaps as well. They were keen on capturing nature's moods – its sublime power, if you will. What is fascinating for me, do you notice those slightly darkened parts. Is that something that brings attention to one’s memory of that season and landscape? What is your view of this? Editor: I see it, I guess those dark areas may reflect Burnitz's own sense of impending loss. It almost feels elegiac. Curator: Exactly! I see he offers us more than just trees and hills; perhaps also a touch of melancholy with its charm. What a delicious blend, huh? Editor: That's really beautifully put. I’ll never look at an autumn landscape the same way again! Curator: Maybe that´s how we can learn from and enjoy paintings that touch our souls?
