Michel Majerus made this unnamed painting sometime before 2002, and it feels like a brain explosion of color and text. It’s like he just grabbed every thought and image and slapped it onto the canvas. Look at how he’s got these blocks of flat color, almost like a screen, then scrawled words and graphics all over it. The paint isn't trying to hide anything; it's all about the here and now. Notice how the words ‘plant explosive device’ are collaged over a cartoonish face, while phrases like ‘fuck the intention of the artist’ are daubed in the background? It’s all about questioning the rules, playing with meaning, and embracing the chaos. This piece totally makes me think of Sigmar Polke, another artist who loved mixing high and low culture, and challenging what painting could be. Majerus is part of that ongoing conversation, proving that art is always up for grabs, always ready to be messed with.
