Jacob Coldewijn created these “Floskaartjes,” or flashcards, during a time of significant social and political upheaval in Europe. The enlightenment ideals of equality were circulating through society, even as stark class differences remained entrenched. These cards, printed in Amsterdam, offered a glimpse into the rigid social hierarchy of the time. Each card depicts a different figure, ranging from royalty to common laborers, reflecting the diverse roles within society. Think about how gender is performed in the cards. Notice the contrasting attire and activities assigned to men and women? The cards served not only as an educational tool, but also as a subtle form of social commentary. They invite us to consider the values and assumptions embedded in these images, and to reflect on our own place within the social fabric.
