Mary Newbold Sargent made this sketch in graphite, as a study, a way to catch a fleeting thought, a feeling, or even just a little visual rhythm. I love the open page, the blankness. It's like she's inviting us into her process, the way one mark leads to another. See that small cluster of marks near the bottom? It's a dark little scribble, almost like a nervous tic, but it anchors the whole composition. I wonder, was that the first thing she drew, and then the others followed? The energy in the work feels immediate, unburdened by the pressure of a finished product. It reminds me a bit of Cy Twombly, in its casual, almost accidental beauty. Art isn't always about answers, sometimes it's just about asking questions, and letting the marks themselves lead the way.
