Editor: We’re looking at "Epimetheus opent de doos van Pandora," or "Epimetheus Opening Pandora's Box," an engraving by Pierre Audouin from 1801. It's got this old engraving style that feels very formal and classical. I'm initially struck by how stark and almost unsettling the scene is. The box seems to unleash chaos, yet the figures are so poised. What are your initial thoughts? Curator: Well, aren't we all a little Pandora sometimes, opening up boxes we shouldn't? It’s interesting, isn’t it, how Audouin captured this pivotal moment? The Neoclassical style lends a sense of order, but the scene itself is pure disorder erupting. Look at the figures emerging from the box—war, strife, misery— rendered as ethereal, almost graceful beings. Does that strike you as contradictory, that juxtaposition of form and content? Editor: Absolutely! The calmness of Pandora and Epimetheus versus the turmoil spewing out is very strange. I guess I would have expected more…drama? Curator: Perhaps that's the point! Think of Neoclassicism’s fascination with control, with reason. Audouin, perhaps, is suggesting that even in the most ordered societies, chaos lurks just beneath the surface, ready to burst forth. That the rational mind might always give way to intuition, our own human tendency for error! Do you think Audouin sympathizes with Epimetheus's plight? Or do you sense a note of censure? Editor: I hadn’t considered the idea of censure... I was so focused on the chaos! I guess I assumed Epimetheus was just a victim. But now I see a parallel with how societies, or even people, might be blamed for problems that are maybe inevitable. Curator: Exactly! This image reflects our never-ending struggle. An engraving about culpability, consequence, and maybe, just maybe, the faint glimmer of hope remaining in that fateful box. So much for something so simple as an illustration! Editor: Wow, I will definitely never look at Pandora's Box the same way again. Thanks for that deep dive!
