Jacques Hérold conjures a spectral form, a sort of being, maybe a plant, with paint, and a whole lot of careful line work. See how the surface seems to ripple with fine grooves, like tiny rivers flowing over this creature? Each strand appears separately drawn. The texture is smooth, the paint evenly applied, but the effect is wild! Look at the creature’s arms, and the way they curl, reaching and flexing. The colour palette is a bit muted, greens, reds, yellows, but it feels like the creature is glowing from within. The way the colours are built up and layered gives depth to the form. The longer I look, the more I’m reminded of Hilma af Klint, and her botanical abstractions. It's like Hérold is channeling the same energy, exploring the hidden forces of nature with a similar combination of precision and free-flowing imagination. Art is one big conversation!
