Katsuhito Nishikawa made this drawing with what looks like graphite. Notice how the whole composition seems to be built around a single, concentrated motif, almost floating on the page. There’s such a tension in the push and pull between the stark white of the paper and the dense graphite lines; it makes the drawing feel like it’s breathing. The texture of the lines, scratched and layered, gives the flower-like form a tactile quality, like you could reach out and feel its grooves. This reminds me of some of Agnes Martin’s drawings, with their quiet, meditative quality. But where Martin is all about the grid, Nishikawa has this organic, almost explosive energy contained within such a simple form. It shows you how something minimal can also be incredibly complex. Art isn't about answers, it's about asking interesting questions.
