Ernst Ludwig Kirchner made this woodcut, "Three Bathers on the Beach", using woodblocks and colored inks. This isn't paint applied to canvas. It's a printmaking process, where the artist carves an image into a block of wood. Each color you see required a separate block, carefully aligned and pressed onto the paper. The wood grain itself becomes part of the image, adding texture and a sense of raw energy. Kirchner was part of the "Die Brücke," or "The Bridge," group of artists, who were interested in expressing strong emotions through simplified forms and bold colors. Woodcut is an older, more vernacular medium than painting. The use of wood reflects a rejection of academic traditions and a desire to connect with a more primal, expressive mode. The labor-intensive process also speaks to a different kind of artistic commitment. It’s not about quick gestures, but about deliberate, physical engagement with the material. Paying attention to materials and process helps us understand the context in which an artwork was made, challenging our conventional ideas of 'high' and 'low' art.
