This drawing of a waist, sleeves 23” long, waist length 10”, was made by Sylvia Dezon sometime in the mid twentieth century. It’s incredible how Dezon’s delicate line work and subtle shading bring this garment to life, it really captures the way that clothing exists as a process, not just an object. Look closely, and you'll notice the intricate detailing of the bodice, the way the lines converge and radiate, creating a sense of volume and form. The texture of the fabric is almost palpable, conveyed through the varying densities of the pencil strokes. It’s like Dezon is whispering secrets about the construction of this garment, revealing its inner workings with each mark. I’m reminded of Agnes Martin’s grids, and how she was always aiming at perfection but accepting the imperfections. Ultimately, art isn’t about answers, it’s about embracing the questions.
