This moon flask with lily motif was made by Minton, the famous English porcelain manufactory. The flask is made from glazed porcelain, with applied sprigs of white clay creating the striking floral relief. Minton was known for its innovative production techniques, and here we see a combination of industrial precision and hand-applied detail. The deep blue ground is uniformly applied, giving a sense of depth and richness to the piece. The lily, in contrast, is built up from individual pieces of clay, skillfully manipulated to create a three-dimensional effect. The sprigging is fascinating: it is an efficient way of ornamenting porcelain, but also provides an active surface, a visual delight. Consider how the flask's materials and making processes influence its appearance. The smoothness of the glazed porcelain contrasts with the textured surface of the lily, while the weight and density of the clay give the flask a sense of solidity and permanence. Paying attention to these details allows us to appreciate the full artistry of this object, challenging traditional distinctions between fine art and craft.
