This small color photograph, “5-17-56 Dorie,” presents us with a woman named Dorie in a dress, on what seems to be a spring day back in 1956. I can’t help but wonder about the anonymous person who snapped this picture. You can tell it's not a "staged" scene. The photo has the feel of a snapshot, capturing an ordinary moment, and yet there is this desire, this need to capture something that will last. The color has faded, giving it a slightly dreamy, nostalgic quality, like a half-remembered story. I wonder what Dorie was like. Was she a painter, too? Did she also look at things and see the world in a different way? Did she also think about the future? Or did she ever imagine that future people would be pondering her existence? This small piece of paper is a moment of connection to the past, reminding us that art is a conversation across time, inspiring each other’s creativity.
