Laurent Delvaux created this terracotta study for a hovering putto sometime in the 18th century. Delvaux, born in Belgium, was a key figure in the transition from Baroque to Neoclassical sculpture. The cherubic figure, caught mid-motion, shoulders a piece of what looks like rock or drapery. But what does it mean to see an infant carrying such a weight? Perhaps Delvaux reflects the social structures of the era, where even the innocence of youth was burdened by expectations and societal norms. While rooted in classical traditions, Delvaux's putto offers a tender portrayal of the human condition. His work invites us to consider the emotional and personal weight we all carry, regardless of age or status.
