This "Side Chair" was made by Nicholas Gorid at an unknown date, and whoa, the precision! It's like looking at a super-detailed blueprint, but with this warm, inviting palette of browns, greens, and creams that just pulls you in. What really strikes me is the texture, or lack thereof. The watercolor is so smooth it's almost like the chair could be made of paper itself. And how the fabric of the seat cushion is rendered is great, it looks so inviting! Check out the legs. See how they curve and taper so elegantly? It is art historical but it also makes me think about the flow of energy in a drawing, how a line can imply movement and weight. I'm reminded of Agnes Martin, whose delicate lines and grids create these incredibly serene, almost meditative spaces. Gorid’s piece, like Martin’s, invites you to slow down, to really see.
