Arnold Peter Weisz-Kubínčan’s, Woodcutter, uses expressive strokes to depict a man in what I imagine is his working environment. The colours are earthy and muted; they blend together like memories fading into one another. There's something about the way the colours are layered, almost like sediment, that gives the piece a real sense of depth. You can practically feel the texture of the paper, and the smudging of the pastel adds to the overall sense of intimacy. I keep getting drawn back to the woodcutters’ eyes - Weisz-Kubínčan coaxes out these small details from the layered marks. The woodcutter looks careworn. It reminds me of Kathe Kollwitz and the way she created emotionally loaded work, but this feels like the expression is pushed even further, with more expressive mark making. You get the impression that this is an ongoing conversation, the kind that doesn't have a neat or tidy ending.
