Profile 2014

Editor: Here we have Cameron Platter's "Profile" from 2014, an acrylic painting. The contrasting black background really makes those bright greens and oranges pop. I'm immediately drawn to its playful yet almost chaotic energy. How do you interpret this work? Curator: "Chaotic energy" is a great way to put it! For me, the painting feels like a snapshot of our hyper-stimulated world. The clashing colours and geometric shapes almost vibrate on the canvas, don't they? Platter’s work often uses this vibrant, almost overwhelming aesthetic to comment on contemporary culture – consumerism, information overload... it’s all there, bubbling beneath the surface. I see hints of naive art combined with pop art. Editor: Interesting! So it's not just a fun abstract piece, it's a commentary. But what about the title, "Profile"? Does that give us a clue? Curator: I think the "Profile" is really a meta portrait of modern society... it doesn't seem figurative to me. Maybe it suggests a superficial reading of our current situation, a quick scroll through the highlights without ever really engaging. And these abstract shapes are really intriguing. Do they echo forms found in nature perhaps, or something more artificial? Editor: I see it now. The shapes kind of remind me of simplified plants or organic forms juxtaposed with something man-made, unnatural. Like a garden viewed through a cracked screen! I wouldn't have picked that up on my own. Curator: It's that tension that makes Platter's work so compelling. We’re drawn in by the bright colours and playful forms, but then left with this uneasy feeling that something isn’t quite right. This tension mirrors how the world makes me feel. Editor: I’ll definitely be looking at Platter’s work differently from now on, understanding it as both visually stimulating and culturally reflective! Thanks.
