Leo Leuppi made this painting, Bünishof, with an Expressionist style – you can see it in the bold colours and simplified forms. The house is central, almost childlike in its rendering, and the scene comes alive through this process of making. The colours are really juicy here, aren't they? The thick application of paint gives everything a tactile quality, like you could reach out and squish it. There’s this tension between the flat areas of colour and the suggestion of depth created by the composition. Look at how he’s used these little dashes of red and pink in the bushes to create this sense of volume and form. It’s all about the physicality of the paint, how it sits on the surface, how it reflects light, how it oozes out of the brush. This reminds me of the work of Gabriele Münter – that same interest in capturing a feeling or emotion through colour and form. It’s like they’re both trying to figure something out, not just represent it. Like art itself, this piece is not about fixed answers but about embracing a range of perspectives.
