This contact sheet, Dog Show 4, by Robert Frank is a field of light and shadow, a real push-pull of values. Frank really went to town on this one, and I love the immediacy of the silver gelatin print. You can almost smell the darkroom. The images are arranged in a grid, and I’m struck by the contrast between the fuzzy softness of the dogs, and the sharp geometry of the built environment. It’s kind of like a dance, or maybe a collision, between the organic and the inorganic. There's a particular frame where the shadow of a dog stretches across the pavement. It's so graphic, so flattened, it almost becomes an abstract shape. Thinking about other artists who played with light, I'm reminded of Garry Winogrand, another street photographer. But where Winogrand was all about capturing the frenetic energy of the city, Frank seems more interested in these quiet, almost melancholic moments. Ultimately, it’s a piece that invites you to slow down, to look closely, and to find beauty in the everyday.
