Pieter de Jode the Younger created this engraving of August Adolf, Baron of Trantau around the mid-17th century. Surrounding the Baron’s likeness, you'll notice a rich array of symbols, each a window into the values and aspirations of the time. The Baron is framed by heraldic symbols and martial objects, signifying nobility and military prowess. Yet, note the caduceus, entwined snakes around a staff, traditionally a symbol of Hermes, messenger of the gods, but here likely representing diplomacy and negotiation—a subtle nod to his role as a German legate. It calls to mind the Rod of Asclepius, a symbol of medicine, seen throughout antiquity and still today. Observe how such symbols carry cultural memory. The owl, perched atop the frame, traditionally an emblem of wisdom, echoes the goddess Athena's association with insight and strategic thinking. These symbols, although rooted in antiquity, resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings, reflecting a non-linear progression, engaging our subconscious on a deeper level.
