Etienne Delaune made this print, Diana and Orion, using the technique of engraving. Engraving is an intaglio process, meaning that lines are incised into a metal plate, ink is applied, and then the surface is wiped clean, leaving ink only in the engraved lines. The plate is then pressed onto paper, transferring the image. Look closely and you can see the crisp, precise lines that are characteristic of this method. Engraving was a highly skilled craft, demanding years of training. It allowed for the creation of detailed and reproducible images, which were in high demand during the Renaissance for disseminating information and artistic ideas. The process involved significant labor, from preparing the metal plate to the meticulous work of engraving and printing. Delaune was among many artists who skillfully combined craft and art.
