Gustave Buchet made Composition avec 7 tubes with oil paint, and when you look closely you can see how the artist lays down each colour in distinct blocks, constructing form using a limited palette of brown, peach, and steel grey. I’m drawn to the way he treats the surface, those tubes are so smooth, almost metallic, but the flat planes feel chalky and still. It’s a funny mix of industrial and earthy. There’s a lot of visual push and pull, and it makes you wonder what kind of space you’re in. Those lines almost feel like shadows or reflections of the tubes, which adds another layer of depth. It’s as if the artist is playing with both form and perspective, creating an alternate reality. This piece reminds me of Fernand Leger and his love of machinery. Both artists share this interest in transforming everyday objects into abstract compositions, but I see more warmth here, maybe a little less machine age anxiety. Art is always a conversation and an echo, but it’s never a copy.
