Konstantin Bogaevsky's "Evening Landscape" looks like it was built up with tiny strokes of paint, a bit like Seurat, but wilder. I imagine Bogaevsky standing in a field somewhere, squinting as the sun goes down. The painting seems to glow from within, radiating warmth from ochre, russet, and sienna tones across the field. The sky is a swirl of lilac and grey, kind of dreamy. The paint looks thin, almost like watercolor in some areas. But it’s also really built up in the foreground. I can see the texture. There's a path winding its way through the landscape and I can imagine the artist walking through it, contemplating the horizon, which feels pretty romantic. Bogaevsky’s work has this quality, echoing Symbolist painters, but with its own earthy sensibility. It's like he's searching for something beyond the surface of things. And that’s the thing about painting: it’s always a conversation across time, inspiring each other to keep pushing, keep searching.
