Abraham Johannes Ruytenschildt made this drawing of a standing woman with a bundle of wheat using pen in brown and red ink. Dating from the late 18th or early 19th century in the Netherlands, this image speaks to the changing social landscape of the time. Agriculture was the dominant sector, yet the Industrial Revolution was beginning to take hold, slowly reshaping the rural economy. The woman carrying wheat evokes classical images of agricultural bounty, but here we find a faceless figure, perhaps suggesting a shift in the perception and status of rural labor. The drawing’s existence as a study rather than a finished work gives us insight into the institutional art world, then dominated by academies and the teaching of drawing. To fully understand this work, we can turn to archives of economic history, studies of agrarian society, and records from art academies to understand how the artist situates himself within this changing world. Art doesn't exist in a vacuum; it is deeply embedded in the fabric of social and institutional life.
