Carel Adolph Lion Cachet created this curtain from sheared velvet with a design of "Sea Nymphs" in dark blue on gold. Cachet came of age during the Dutch Golden Age, when art and design flourished. At the time, textiles played a crucial role in shaping domestic spaces and expressing social status. "Zeenymphen" reflects the cultural fascination with mythology and the sea, particularly how they are used to represent femininity. The choice of sea nymphs evokes themes of beauty, seduction, and the mysteries of the ocean, reflecting the artist's interest in symbolism and decorative arts. While seemingly traditional, the curtain challenges conventional representations by embedding mythical figures within a functional object, blurring the boundaries between art and design, which invites us to reconsider the role of women, myth, and design in society. It serves as a reminder of how deeply ingrained these narratives are in our cultural fabric.
