Sébastien Leclerc I created this undated print, "Gebruik van een meetlint geïllustreerd," using etching techniques. The composition is neatly structured into three distinct horizontal panels, each presenting a different landscape scenario. The dominant visual element is the line, used with precision to define forms, spatial relationships, and mathematical concepts. These lines are not merely descriptive; they function as a semiotic system, illustrating methods of measurement and spatial understanding. Leclerc employs geometric shapes and perspective to structure each panel, using a kind of visual language. The landscapes are not simply scenes but diagrams. This diagrammatic approach challenges our conventional understanding of landscape art. It transforms the natural world into a problem of representation, where space and distance are quantified. Leclerc invites us to question how we perceive and interpret the world around us, not just aesthetically but also intellectually, using lines and forms as tools for understanding.
