Curator: Alan Davie's drawing, "Interested Sperm Around an Egg," currently held in the Tate Collections, presents itself as a small, yet powerful image rendered in charcoal. Editor: My first impression is of primordial chaos, a dark, almost violent energy swirling around a central void. Curator: Davie often incorporated automatism, allowing the subconscious to guide his hand. We see this in the raw materiality of the charcoal, the direct mark-making, and the textured surface of the paper itself. The process becomes a crucial element in understanding the work. Editor: The cultural context here is important too, isn't it? This image challenges traditional notions of reproduction that were prevalent when it was made. It is very open. Curator: Indeed, by focusing on the materials and the physical act of creation, we can appreciate how Davie blurred the lines between representation and abstraction, elevating the mundane to the symbolic. Editor: It seems to me that Davie is making us reconsider the boundaries between science and art. It is a provocative image. Curator: An excellent point, and on that note, let's continue to the next work, and more consideration of such ideas. Editor: Agreed. It's interesting to see how such simple materials can evoke such a complex set of ideas.

Influenced by the Surrealists, Davie would make prints by sandwiching ink between a pane of glass and a sheet of paper, and scratching the paper with his fingers. The image only became visible once the sheet was lifted. Davie was enthusiastic about this chance element, writing: 'I have discovered so much and developed so rapidly ¿ My work is something very strange'. His poetic titles relate this strange imagery to the natural world. Gallery label, August 2004
