This untitled work was made by Sam Francis using watercolour. I love how Francis lets the paint do its thing, like he's in conversation with the colours. The blues are so fluid, dripping and pooling in ways that feel both controlled and totally free. It's not just about the colour, but also the way the water interacts with the paper, creating these delicate textures and edges. Take a look at one of those darker blue drips near the top; it’s like a little path the paint decided to take. The gaps of untouched white paper, sparkling through the blues, are like breaths in the painting. It reminds me of Helen Frankenthaler, another artist who understood the poetics of paint. There's no fixed meaning here, just an invitation to get lost in the process.
