Fernand Léger made ‘Discs,’ a large-scale oil painting, with bold shapes and colours. I can only imagine the artist in his studio, mixing colours and applying them to the canvas, one on top of the other, with an uncanny sense of geometry. It’s like a crazy machine in there! Léger’s handling of paint seems so confident; the colour is distributed evenly in flat planes, which, to me, demonstrates an almost obsessive precision. He’s got these overlapping circles, arranged in a kind of visual harmony, which I find really satisfying. I think he's showing off a bit. The composition suggests a dynamic interplay between order and chaos, or, maybe, a building under construction. It reminds me of other modernist painters like Sonia Delaunay who explored similar ideas. In abstract painting, there are no mistakes, only opportunities for reinvention and discovery. Each gesture is a record of a moment in time, captured in paint, inviting us to reflect on the endless possibilities of perception.
