Victor Adam created this lithograph of two horses in the 19th century, using the recently invented printing technique that democratized image production. Lithography involves drawing on a flat stone with a greasy crayon, then treating the stone so that ink adheres only to the drawn areas. This printmaking method allowed for a more direct, expressive line compared to earlier engraving techniques. Here, the immediacy is apparent in the dynamic, sketched quality of the horses. The contrast between the energetic "Cheval Romain" at the top and the tired "Chevaux de Poste" at the bottom speaks volumes. These were working animals, essential to transportation and communication in the pre-industrial world. Adam captures not just their physical likeness, but also the social role they played, and the labor they performed. The lithographic process itself, being relatively quick and reproducible, mirrors the efficiency and demands of the era.
