This photograph shows men posing in a factory amongst a display of machines. The image, being a monochrome photograph, relies on light and shadow. The textures become so important here – you can almost feel the coldness of the metal, the rough surfaces of the machinery. I’m drawn to the subtle gradations in tone, from the deep shadows under the machinery to the brighter highlights on the men's suits. It’s all about the nuances. Look at the way the light catches the edges of the equipment, creating these crisp, clean lines against the softer shadows. This makes me think of the German photographer, August Sander, who also aimed for an objective rendering of his subjects, but always with this incredible sensitivity to light and form. Like Sander, this photographer captured a moment in time, a slice of life, and, in doing so, gives us a glimpse into the social and industrial landscape of the era. A photograph can offer this type of perspective that's open for interpretation.
