This sculpture of a female figure was carved by Jacob Epstein from a piece of flenite. Imagine Epstein working away, chipping at the dense stone, searching for the form within. The figure hunches over protectively as if guarding something precious. The way the arms and hands cradle the torso, there's a sense of vulnerability but also strength, wouldn't you agree? Look how the cool dark stone is smoothed and polished in some areas, but left rough and textured in others. You can really feel the artist’s hand in the work, can’t you? Each mark and curve tells a story of how the stone was shaped and coaxed into form. The pose and the material resonate with ancient sculpture, as well as with the modernist primitivism of Epstein's time. This figure connects us to a much broader conversation around the body, its representation, and its connection to the earth. It has this amazing way of being so solid, yet so full of feeling, a testament to the power of sculpture to embody complex emotions.
