Johann Lochmann created this portrait of Johann Jacob Hottinger, sometime in the 18th century. Note the composition which gives a feeling of classical formality and the careful placement of the sitter in relation to symbols of his profession. Look at the geometric precision with which Lochmann renders the textures and spatial depth. Hottinger's face, framed by a stark white ruff, is rendered with a remarkable attention to detail. Lochmann is careful to define the gradations of light and shadow that give volume to the face and hands, contrasting with the flat planes of the books and background. The lines of the engraving are organized in a way that directs our gaze through the image. Hottinger’s gestures and the open book on the table draw our focus. The artwork is a formal study of texture, light, and form that, beyond its aesthetic qualities, creates a dialogue about representation, identity, and the circulation of knowledge. The careful construction implies an intellectual and social position. It invites us to look closely and question the meanings that art can construct.
