Here are two different fabric works by Louise Bourgeois, with their muted colours and hand-stitched elements, they feel like two pages from a visual diary. I am struck by how the simple act of sewing becomes a form of mark-making, connecting to a wider history of women’s work and craft. On the left, the soft pastel colours make me think of a faded memory, maybe a childhood blanket or a worn photograph. The shapes are almost geometric, yet the uneven edges and visible stitching soften any rigidity. There is something deeply personal and intimate about this work. On the right, the darker tones and linear patterns evoke a different mood—perhaps a sense of quiet contemplation or introspection. The lines are rhythmic and repetitive, like a mantra or a form of meditation. Bourgeois is in conversation with a long history of makers, each contributing their own unique voice and perspective, and each building on the work of those who came before.
