Maria Vos created this study sheet, sometime in the 19th century, using graphite on paper. Vos employed traditional art materials to depict a landscape featuring a figure on a cart, and other studies. Graphite's powdery nature allows for quick sketches, capturing fleeting moments and impressions with ease. The artist's hand guides the graphite pencil across the paper, leaving behind delicate lines and subtle gradations of tone. With the pencil's tip, Vos captured the changing qualities of light across the scenery, and the transient nature of human activity within the landscape. These quick sketches were preparatory studies, made to master the skills of drawing, before committing to paint. Vos’ choice of graphite on paper reflects the artist's dedication to mastering the fundamentals of drawing, and also the economics of artmaking. It highlights the significance of materials and making in understanding the artist's creative process.
