This ten gulden note from 1930, printed by Johan Enschedé & Zn., is full of intriguing details. Look at the way they’ve handled the greens and grays, not quite monotone, but closely related, like a low conversation. It makes me think of how an artist works through a limited palette, pushing the boundaries within a set of rules. The physicality of this banknote is present in the paper itself, worn around the edges. What I find most compelling is the scripted signature. It’s so loose and free, compared to the more formal typeface. It reminds me that even within a system, there's room for a gesture of individuality. This reminds me of the work of Corita Kent, who embraced the aesthetics of commercial printing. This banknote, like her prints, shows how art can be found in unexpected places, challenging us to see beauty in the everyday. It is in these small details that larger questions of value and representation emerge.
