Chōbunsai Eishi created "The Fifth Month" as part of his series "The Twelve Months," using the woodblock printing technique. Woodblock printing is an inherently collaborative process. From the initial drawing to carving the woodblocks, and finally to printing, each stage demands skilled labor. The final print is a testament to the work of many hands. The flat planes of color and strong outlines, characteristic of this technique, define the forms of the figures and their surroundings. The subtle variations in color are achieved by layering multiple impressions from separate blocks. Consider the labor involved in producing such a print, from the cultivation of the trees used for the blocks, to the making of the paper, the skilled carving and printing processes, and even the distribution and consumption of the final product. This print offers insights into the social and economic context of its creation. It reminds us of the interconnectedness of materials, making, and the wider world.
