Paweł Kluza made 'Chałupy Welcome To' in 2017, with what looks like acrylic on canvas. It’s mostly blues, yellows and reds, and the paint looks laid down pretty flatly. I can imagine Kluza making this. Maybe he started with the buildings, using the blue to map out the architectural forms. Then came the trees, like bright sentinels standing guard. I like the kind of graphic way the leaves are done. Each one like an eye looking back at you. Then there are the figures scattered around, some with labels like "asymmetric" and "mature", and some are naked. It's a playful, idiosyncratic world. A world like those of Redon or Guston, who made their own rules about what painting could be. Like them, Kluza embraces a kind of freedom and directness. It's clear Kluza is part of this ongoing conversation among painters, each adding their own mark, their own vision. And in this piece, he's given us an invitation to his very own Chałupy.
