This Retablo of the Trinity was made by E. Boyd, probably in the mid-20th century, using humble materials: paint on what appears to be a simple wooden panel. Boyd was a key figure in the revival of traditional New Mexican art forms. Retablos like this one, were traditionally devotional images painted on wood, often depicting saints or religious scenes. But here the holy trinity is depicted. These were not originally conceived as “high art,” but as practical expressions of faith and cultural identity. The painting's flat, graphic style and earthy palette reflect the limited resources available to the artist. The visible brushstrokes and slight imperfections in the wood serve as a reminder of the hand-made nature of the artwork. The making process imbues the artwork with cultural significance; the artwork serves as a potent symbol of New Mexico’s cultural heritage. By engaging with a traditional craft and fine art form, Boyd underscores the value of these traditions, challenging the traditional hierarchy between art and craft.
